Fact Sheet
STUDENTS:
- Chemistry has 50 majors graduating approximately 10 each year.
- Many of our students have obtained summer REUs or internships.
- Students regularly present the results of their undergraduate research investigations at scientific meetings (Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, San Diego, New Orleans, Hawaii).
- Many students are involved in the award-winning American Chemical Society-Student Affiliate group.
FACULTY:
Statistics (for Fall 2006):
- 9 full time faculty and 8 adjunct faculty.
- All of the faculty hold an advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.).
- Our faculty has earned degrees from a diversity of public and private undergraduate and graduate institutions.
CURRICULUM:
- Chemistry offers an American Chemical Society certified baccalaureate degree. Non-certified degrees are also offered with emphasis in biochemistry and environmental chemistry. Most pre-professional students major in chemistry with the biochemistry emphasis. Faculty work with students who have an interest in other areas, such as forensic science or chemistry, to design the best curriculum possible to meet their needs.
- All of our students are required to conduct undergraduate research.
- Internships are available.
- Our largest lectures have 150-160 students in the non-majors courses, but 75-80 students in science major courses.
- Some are as small as 8-12 students.
- Many classes have only 20-50 students.
- All lab sections are restricted to 24 or fewer students and taught by faculty with advanced degrees (MS or Ph.D.).
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT:
- We recently completed minor classroom renovations in the Science Center during Summer 2005 and a major building addition in July 2003 and renovation in August 1999 that provides the discipline with new technology-enhanced teaching and research space.
- Our teaching and research labs are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation that students get to use regularly.
- Computers in both the teaching and research laboratories provide students with the opportunity to do molecular modeling and computational studies.
