Please Read Before Completing this Section   Part IV of the annual report is OPTIONAL; local sections are not required to complete this part of the report. Part IV is used to collect nominations for a variety of local section awards. Local sections that postmark or submit their complete annual report electronically by February 15, 2006 may nominate themselves for a variety of ACS awards, by completing this portion of the annual report. Local Sections may complete the EZ Annual Report form and self-nominate themselves for any of the awards except the ACS Award for Outstanding Performance by Local Sections. For eligibility, local sections must complete Part IV of the annual report. A local section may nominate themselves in several categories. However, only one nomination per award category is permitted. A separate form must be completed for each award entry and included in Part IV. Selection of the award winners is determined solely by members of the Committee presenting the awards. Award finalists will be announced in June 2006; winners will be announced on September 12, 2006 at the ChemLuminary Awards, held during the Fall National Meeting in San Francisco, CA. Description of Activity or Program: Please provide a synopsis of the activity/program and state clearly, in 1,000 words or less, why the activity/program merits consideration for this particular award. Only activities/programs that were held in 2005 are eligible for consideration. You may wish to include the following in your description: Name of Activity/Program; Date Conducted; Site/Location; Number of Participants. You may submit pictures, newspaper clippings, announcements, etc. by hard copy, to support your nomination. Please refer to the specific guidelines for each award. ACS Award for Outstanding Performance by Local Sections   Our Section would like to be nominated for the ACS Awards for Outstanding Performance Awards by a Local Section. These awards are given by the Local Section Activities Committee and recognize local sections that have demonstrated exceptional, overall achievement. The awards are judged in six size categories. Never have so few done so much with so little! Given the size of our section and the number of active members, we feel that no other section could possibly exhibit the enthusiasm or work as hard as our members and volunteers. The programs, events, and activities range from 1-2 hour presentations and demonstrations to 13-hour non-stop programs. Programs are designed for audiences of all ages. Each year we embrace the NCW theme even though we dont always participate in the unifying event. We feel that our section tries to do something for everyone. For example, just look at the list of some of our activities for 2005: - Girl Scout Merit Badge Overnight  more than 80 young girl scouts participated in this event. The waiting list for this event grows longer each year! The scouts performed chemical experiments for 5 hours (7 PM to midnight)  earning 3 merit badges. The scouts were entertained by chemical demonstrations for about an hour starting around 12:30 AM! Some people slept a little after that. The scouts had orange juice and donuts before leaving around 8:00 AM. - All-day Saturday Boy Scout Merit Badge program  another favorite for many years. Boy Scouts earn their Chemistry Merit Badges by performing the chemistry experiments in their book plus some additional experiments. They are required to fill out the paperwork and turn everything in before they are entertained with chemical demonstrations. - Resume Preparation and Mock Interviews for college students  this program for Junior and Seniors is designed to help students prepare for job/professional school interviews and to prepare resumes using the ACS guidelines. - Demonstrations for grade schools, middle schools, cub scouts and the general public. Members of the local section continue to provide demonstrations for all kinds of audiences. The demonstrations are designed to teach chemistry as well as entertain audiences of all ages. - Mole Day and Earth Day Celebrations  High School Competitions with tours and demonstrations; 3-member teams for each high school compete by answering questions. Each member of the team must answer each question and the scores are tallied for the team. The first and second place teams are awarded plaques to take back to their school. Each school is encouraged to bring other students to cheer their team to victory and to participate in the chemical demonstrations and tours of the chemistry department at the University of Southern Indiana. - Olympiad Competition  our section has been participating in this event almost since its inception. - Hands-on Activities with grade school students, NCW visits to area 4-grade classrooms, Hands-on Activities at the Museum (NCW). These activities are only possible because of the participation of the Student Affiliates in the area. However, everyone, including the students themselves, have fun. - Career DVD. Joining with St. Louis Local Section to obtain a grant and produce a career DVD to help other local sections help their members who cannot attend national meetings was a major undertaking for our local section. Dr. Warren Bush was gracious enough to present material from the workshop that he conducts for Career Services at national meetings for this DVD. Copies have been made available for distribution to all local sections for their use in career programs for their section. - Participation in President Carrolls tour  President Carroll visited the General Electric plant in our section. He also met with college students from the local universities and talked about the opportunities available to them in chemistry. - Medical Explorers - A new activity that was initiated this fall will offer opportunities to local high school students to learn about medical careers. The section hopes that the students will begin to understand the importance of chemistry in medicine/pharmaceuticals, etc. And the list goes on! This year our industrial members were more active. They not only participated in NCW events and provided funds to help defray expenses, but our chair for 2006 is from industry for the first time in a long time! Industrial members helped with the hands-on activities at the Museum, with the Girl Scout Overnight and with classroom visits near the plants. One of our goals for this year was to try to get more industrial participation in the section. All these activities are in addition to regularly scheduled section meetings. The councilor attends all the national meetings and we always send a representative to the Leadership Conference. Although our website needs work, we do post events and information for members and the public. Improving the website remains one of our goals but the problem is that we seem not to have the time to tell people what we are doing because we are too busy doing it! We are often fortunate to have the local television stations and newspapers cover a number of our events. The media is becoming more familiar with the type of activities they we provide and they often take us up on our invitations. 2-3 Sentence Abstract for Program Booklet The number and variety of activities sponsored by the Indiana/Kentucky Border Section appeal to audiences of all ages. Local Section and Division Activities Committees Award   Local Section and Division Interaction Award A Local Section or Division may nominate themselves for up to 3 Joint Awards. However, if the same Division and Local Section have held several joint events these should be combined into one nomination. A separate form must be completed for each entry. Nominations are limited to 1,000 words and should (1) describe the nature of the Local Section-Division interaction, (2) Indicate the division which conducted the joint event or activity and (3) explain why it should be considered for the award. Please do not send supporting materials. Events should be innovative and extra consideration will be given to events that reach a wide audience, and have good publicity. Activities which were organized and planned jointly rather than simply financially supported by one or other group will be favored. The nomination must reflect the criteria for the award and must be unique for each entry. Local Section Career Program Awards   Our Section would like to be nominated for the Outstanding Local Section Career Program Award. These awards are given by the Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs and recognize both a large to very large and a small to medium large local section that have demonstrated career programs that facilitate and contribute to a significant number of members' professional development. Only local sections with trained coordinators are eligible for the award. Warren Bush graciously agreed to give a presentation based on his workshop for Career Services at the national meetings. We recognized that many of the members who need help because they are just beginning their careers or have lost their jobs and are again searching for employment cannot attend national meetings. So, we decided to produce a DVD that could be used by the local sections to help their members. Dr. Bush came to the University of Southern Indiana and worked with the media people at the University. Students and members of the section provided the audience for the presentation which was recorded and edited by the media staff at the University. Some of the DVDs were distributed at the national meeting in Washington DC. Enough DVDs were produced to provide at least one DVD to each local section 2-3 Sentence Abstract for Program Booklet Producing a DVD that could be used by local sections to help their unemployed members was the driving force for the grant that was submitted by the Indiana/Kentucky Border Section and the St. Louis Section. Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) Awards for Local Sections and Divisions   Our Section would like to be nominated for the Outstanding Local Section Younger Chemists Committee Award. This award is given by the Women Chemists Committee and recognizes an event supported by a local section that addresses the concerns of women who are pursuing a career in the chemical sciences or who may be considering a career in the chemical sciences. Examples include a program highlighting women?s present or past contributions in the chemical sciences, an outreach program to women science students, or an event that offers networking or training opportunities to women actively engaged in the chemical sciences. Society Committee on Education Awards   Our Section would like to be nominated for the ACS Student Affiliates Chapter Interaction Award. This award is given by the Society Committee on Education and recognizes an ACS local section that has contributed significantly to the pre-professional development of ACS Student Affiliates (SA) in its region. The award recipient will have demonstrated considerable interaction with SA chapters by initiatives such as inviting chapter members to participate in local section monthly meetings and activities; assisting with SA chapter activities by providing speakers or volunteers or contributing to the overall success of the chapters in other ways; and encouraging SA attendance at ACS national and regional meetings by providing travel assistance to chapters in their section. Only by joining forces with the Student Affiliates! Without the help of the Student Affiliates, our section could not conduct so many different activities. We work with the Student Affiliate chapters on projects throughout the year. Obviously, the biggest project is the NCW program, which involves a variety of activities. Some of the activities in which the Student Affiliates were involved this year include: Hands-On Activities " Evansville Museum  Chemical Demonstrations and Hands-On Activities  annual event " Downtown Street Festival/Toyota River City Autofest on Sept. 24th, 2005. Hands-on activities for children were performed at the Kids Garage in conjunction with USIs ACSSA group. Approximately 75 children stopped by for the fun. Local section members were also involved in the Funk-in-the-City Art Show on the same day. At this event hands-on activities for children were performed at the Hands- On-Discovery area in conjunction with USIs ACSSA group. In addition, a demonstration show was performed by the ACSSA members. Approximately 150 children saw the show and did the activities. " 4th Grade classroom visits during NCW  impossible without the Student Affiliates help " 4th Grade classroom visits during Earth Day (week) " Impact Ministries ( disadvantaged children in an after school program) " Girl Scout Overnight " Boy Scout Merit Badge Tours and help with high school competitions " Mole Day Celebration " Earth Day Celebration Many of the affiliates attend our sectional meetings. Each year the section recognizes the outstanding sophomore and senior chemistry major at each of the colleges and universities in the section. They are invited to the awards banquet and presented with a $100 check from the section. Members of the section encourage the Affiliates to attend our sectional meetings and often help with the meal expenses for the students to encourage their attendance. The Section also encourages research by providing the students an opportunity to present their research at the annual Undergraduate Research Poster event. We believe that students learn by doing so we encourage participation in our section. However, we also know that we could not accomplish nearly as much without their help! 2-3 Sentence Abstract for Program Booklet Without the Student Affiliates our Section could never provide all the activities that the community enjoys! Picture of Event   Our Section would like to be nominated for the Outstanding High School Student Program Award This award is given by the Society Committee on Education and is designed to congratulate and recognize local sections that have organized or sponsored outstanding chemistry programs for high school students, such as the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program, science fairs, or chemistry clubs. Winning local sections must demonstrate that they have organized and conducted effective student programs. Outstanding programs should present evidence of the success of their programs in involving students and teachers, appealing to a diverse student population with a variety of activities or events that are relevant to the teaching environment, involving local business/industry, engaging in appropriate publicity, and encouraging involvement of the academic community in the program. Local Section Minority Affairs Committee Awards   Our section would like to be nominated for the Best Overall Local Section Committee on Minority Affairs This award is given by the Committee on Minority Affairs and recognizes a local section committee on minority affairs that consistently promotes and encourages the participation and leadership of underrepresented minorities in the chemical sciences. Examples of qualifying activities may include mentoring minority students, collaborative events with minority advocacy organizations in science, science fairs in underrepresented communities, and programs that foster awareness of minority contributions to the chemical sciences.
