Additional Information:
The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is a young, rapidly-growing primarily undergraduate institution.  The Department of Chemistry offers a strong ACS-certified BS degree and several non-certified degrees.

The Department serves approximately 1000 students per semester, generating 3400 credit hours per semester.  Teaching service courses for other departments is a major responsibility of the Department.  The Department occupies approximately 14,000 ft2 in the modern, multi-million dollar Science Center and is well-equipped with major instrumentation including multinuclear 300 MHz FT-NMR, HPLC MS, GC-MS, FT-IR, Raman, GC, HPLC, AA, DSC, UV-VIS, gas pycnometer, electrochemical analyzer, refractive index detector for gel permeation chromatography, and capillary electrophoresis. The department has also has significant facilities for computational chemistry.

Undergraduate chemistry students are actively involved in research with the Chemistry faculty and research space is dedicated for use by the students and faculty.  Research interests are varied and have led to many presentations at national meetings, such as the national meeting of the American Chemical Society and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research.  Our majors are successful at obtaining summer REU positions and performing well in these positions.  This past summer we sent students to the University of Georgia, University of Alabama-Birmingham, and the University of California-Santa Cruz.  Other students have held summer internships at companies like GE Plastics and Red Spot Paint.

Recruitment, advising, and mentoring undergraduates with varying course needs and career goals are vital to the growth of the department.

The Department actively participates in the IN-KY Border Section of the American Chemical Society, performs many community outreach activities, and coordinates with K-12 teachers in a variety of programs.
