Pott College of Science and Engineering
Spring 2006 Printed Materials Grants
The Dean of the Pott College of Science
and Engineering is pleased to announce that a total of $10,000 will be available
to College faculty during the 2006 Spring Semester for the purchase of printed
materials which support faculty scholarship and teaching. These funds will be
distributed as Printed Materials Grants.
Eligible Materials.
The purpose of a Printed Materials Grant
is to support ongoing research and teaching activity of College faculty. Thus, a
wide array of printed materials can be purchased through this program, including
reference works, research monographs, and other books. Periodical subscriptions
will not be funded by a Printed Materials Grant; however, individual volumes of
a journal or other periodical can be purchased, provided such purchase is
justified in the application. In addition, items which can be purchased by the
Rice Library upon request will not normally be funded; however, in some
circumstances, such items would still be eligible for purchase (for example, a
reference work to which continuous access is needed). Textbooks and equipment
are not generally eligible for purchase.
Application Procedures. Each of the College's Department Chairs will oversee the compilation of a list of requested items from departmental faculty members. The total funds applied for by any department should not exceed $2,000. The application deadline is February 24, 2006.
Each item requested should include the following information.
Complete title/author/publisher/ISBN, or other information necessary to locate and purchase the item requested.
The price of the item requested.
The name(s) and title(s) of the faculty member(s) requesting the item.
A brief rationale for this request (max. 200 words). This rationale should be written by the faculty requesting the item, and should especially address: (i) ways in which this item supports their ongoing research and/or teaching; (ii) reasons that other means of obtaining the item (for example, the Rice Library, or research grant funds) are not viable.
Any full-time member of one of the College's departments is eligible to request an item. A complete application from each department will consist of the department's list of requested items, together with the Chair's signature, acknowledging that he or she has reviewed and approved this list. Final decision for all application items will rest with the Dean of the College. Please see the Dean or Associate Dean of the College if you have questions regarding the Printed Materials Grants program.
Propriety. In keeping with University regulations, all items purchased through the Printed Materials Grants program will be cataloged and remain the property of the Pott College of Science and Engineering. However, purchased materials will reside with the faculty member(s) who requested them, unless those faculty leave USI.
