Faculty Evaluation
Procedures
for Reappointment and Tenure
2. Each year of the probationary period, the evaluation committee will review its evaluee's academic accomplishments in the areas of teaching, scholarship and professional activity, and service. Following this review, the committee will forward its evaluation and recommendations to the Dean for consideration. Should the Chair disagree with the committee majority's evaluation, the Chair has the option of writing a minority report for consideration by the Dean.
3. Each year, the evaluation committee will also draft and send a letter to the evaluee to convey the annual evaluation results. The letter must provide feedback to the evaluee on his/her progress to date in the areas of teaching, scholarship and professional activity, and service. Separate paragraphs must address each of these three areas of faculty endeavor and comment on strengths and weaknesses evident in each. Suggestions for addressing any deficiencies noted in any area should be included. Also, the letter should include a summary paragraph indicating the committee's recommendation to the Dean regarding the candidate's reappointment or tenure, as appropriate. The committee may meet with the candidate to discuss the evaluation results, if the committee and/or candidate so choose; however, this meeting may not substitute for the written evaluation letter. A copy of the committee's letter to the evaluee should be sent to the Dean for inclusion in the candidate's personnel file. The Dean must receive the committee's evaluation and recommendations no later than one week prior to the announced University date upon which reappointment/tenure recommendations are due to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
4. The Dean will review the committee's evaluation and recommendations, and determine whether or not the evaluee should be recommended to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for reappointment and/or tenure. The Dean will also draft and send a letter to the evaluee to convey the results of his/her review and recommendations. In addition, the Dean may meet individually with the evaluee to discuss the overall evaluation and, if appropriate, the candidate's progress toward tenure.
