The job market for scientists and engineers of most types appears solid for the foreseeable future, and at USI, we offer excellent programs that prepare students very well for entry into that market or for graduate or professional school. Let me explain briefly why studying science and engineering at USI is a great idea for students like you.
Maybe you've heard that state universities are large, cold, impersonal monsters where students are numbers, not people; where science and engineering classes are big and taught by graduate students because the faculty members are too busy doing research; and where learning science and engineering as an undergraduate means having a large group of students stand around to watch a laboratory assistant demonstrate things. Right? Not at the University of Southern Indiana. At USI, we feel strongly that students learn science and engineering best by doing science and engineering, not by watching someone else do it. Consequently, the coursework in all our programs (except Mathematics) is laboratory intensive. This means that students get lots of hands-on experience with modern scientific equipment and work closely with faculty to learn scientific and engineering principles by putting them into practice.
Our science and engineering faculty is another selling point for our programs. Our major thrust at USI is teaching, and our science and engineering faculty members are very good at it. When we hire faculty, we look for individuals who are not only good scientists and engineers, but also good teachers who care about students and really want to help them learn. As a result, you'll find that our faculty members, all of whom hold advanced degrees in their disciplines, are knowledgeable, readily accessible and easily approachable.
I could go on about our other advantages for students such as small class sizes, academic advisors who are science and engineering faculty members, our newly renovated science building, and our brand new Science and Education Center. But to really know what we have to offer students like you, you have to experience USI science and engineering first-hand. Therefore, we'd be happy to have you visit us on the USI campus. I encourage you to contact our Admissions Office at (812) 464-1765 or (800) 467-1965 today to make the visit arrangements. We hope to see you soon!
