Lab Report Guidelines

The following items should be included in all reports done for this class:

Title Page - Should include the experiment name and number, the student's name and signature, the lab group/bench, the date the experiment was performed, the course name and number, and the faculty member for whom the report is prepared.

Objectives - Briefly and clearly state what the experiment is designed to test or prove.

Equipment List - What individual components are used to perform the experiment. Workbench designations, serial numbers, etc. should be used to differentiate between identical pieces of equipment.

Narrative - A step-by-step description of how the experiment was performed and what procedures were followed.

Analysis/Discussion - This is a critical appraisal of the data gathered while performing the experiment. Any unexpected results or atypical performance should be pointed out.

Sample Calculations - One example (using experimental data) of any calculation(s) should be included. Calculations should follow a logical progression or problem solving algorithm.

Conclusion - Should include any logical deductions or inferences about the results of the experiment and whether the results of the experiment appear to be valid. Possible explanations for atypical performance should also be cited.

All reports should include where appropriate a circuit schematic drawn using the proper schematic symbols, as well as any tables, charts, graphs or diagrams that may be required by the assignment or that the student feels will clarify the report. Graphics may be placed throughout the report where appropriate or included as a group in an Appendix. All tables, charts, etc. should be clearly labeled, and any citations in the report should reference the label.

All reports will be typed. The report must use proper spelling and good grammar. It is unnecessary to use a CAD system or hand drafting equipment to create the graphic elements of the report, but at a minimum a straightedge and compass or circle template should be used for neatness. Hand drawn graphics should be done on plain white paper or on green engineering graph paper. The hand written data gathering sheet should also be included and may be on any type of paper, but the use of green engineering graph paper is encouraged.

Reports that do not conform to these standards will not be accepted under any circumstances, and will be returned to the student with a failing grade.
