My name is Megan Mahrenholz and I’m a junior in the engineering program here at USI. Engineering isn’t a typical major for a girl, but that certainly didn’t stop me from pursuing it! Let me share a few reasons why I chose to study engineering.

First of all, I really enjoy science and math, especially science; it is very interesting to me to learn about new technologies that are improving peoples’ lives. Another big factor in my choice to study engineering is my interest in the way things work. Even when I was little, one of my favorite things to do was “help” my dad work in the garage. I have always had this fascination with taking things apart, then trying to put them back together.

Combine these reasons with a small, personal engineering program where every professor actually keeps their office doors open and know me by name, and here I am! I feel very fortunate to have this university so close to home. Before I decided to come to USI, I came on a tour and sat in on an Introduction to Engineering class. Afterwards I was able to meet the professor, Dr. Laura Ruhala, and now I work for her as an undergraduate research assistant. Through that small meeting while I was still in high school, I have had the opportunity to work with an international orthopedic trauma company and a surgeon from Deaconess Hospital to evaluate a new external fixation frame component. Last fall the clamp passed FDA requirements in just 8 days!

The Pott College of Science and Engineering has enabled me to build on my previous interests and talents, to learn many valuable skills, and to help people around me with engineering applications.
