I’ve always known I wanted to be an engineer. Since I was a kid, I took apart household items (much to the dismay of my parents) and investigated how they worked. I’ve always liked electrical devices so it seemed natural to study electrical engineering.

I chose USI to be a part of their new engineering program since I wanted to be among its first graduates. During my time at USI I have met many great people and made a lot of friends and contacts in the industry. My studies have been fulfilling and rewarding in classes like Power Systems Analysis and Microcomputer Engineering.

Power Systems Analysis is taught by Dr. Schultz and is my favorite class. Dr. Schultz is also my advisor and has always been there to lend a hand on any problem, in class or out. He is also the current faculty advisor for the IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), a club in which I’ve been a part for three years.

Every year I’ve taken part in a design competition with the IEEE. We placed fourth in our region two years ago against schools like the University of Evansville and Clemson University. My experience with the IEEE has been rewarding as well. I’ve learned much about electronics that is not taught in classrooms anywhere. The student clubs in the engineering department are great for hands-on application of classroom material.

When I graduate I plan to gain employment in the power industry. Eventually I’d like to pursue a master’s degree in electrical engineering and perhaps a doctorate. Ultimately I’d like to teach someday at a university much like USI and have a positive influence on students like the USI engineering faculty has had on me.
