Scholarships and Aid

The Department of Geology and Physics has a number of scholarships and awards for students who have demonstrated high levels of academic performance, either as a student in high school or as a Geology major or as an Earth-Space Science teaching major. The scholarships are awarded by faculty review of potential recipients in the late fall/early spring of each academic year. Where indicated, students may be required to submit an application form to be eligible to receive the award. The details of each award are listed below, along with links to the appropriate application forms, if required.

Belle McGregor Geology Scholarship

Criteria: For outstanding geology students that are selected by the geology faculty. Must demonstrate financial need. May not be awarded to a graduating senior.
Evansville Lapidary Society Scholarship

Selection Process:
  • Faculty to select
Criteria: May be awarded to an incoming geology major or minor with high school GPA equivalent to a B. May also be awarded to a student pursuing a secondary teaching curriculum in science with primary area of study to be Earth-Space Science Teaching. Financial need may be considered, scholarship must be used for tuition and or fees. Recipient should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 at USI. May not be awarded to a graduating senior. Recipient must be enrolled during the coming academic year in order to receive this scholarship. Scholarship is renewable if recipient continues to meet criteria. Student Financial Aid must validate need.
Indiana Oil & Gas Association Geology Scholarship

  • Admission to select
Criteria: Award to an incoming freshman who plans to major in geology at USI, who is a resident of Indiana, and has a minimum 3.0 GPA from their high school. Preference will be given to children and step-children of members of the Indiana Oil & Gas Association or to children and step-children of oil and gas retailers. This scholarship is not renewable. May be used for tuition, fees, and books. Must be enrolled in Geology 161 & 162. May not be awarded to a graduating senior. Recipient must be enrolled during the current academic year in order to receive this scholarship.
J. R. Dick Harris Memorial Scholarship

  • Faculty to select
Criteria: Award to a geology major at USI with a minimum of 15 hours completed geology major coursework and have cumulative GPA of 3.0 who expresses interest to apply geology to Environment, Petroleum or Business. May not be awarded to a graduating senior. Recipient must be enrolled during the coming academic year in order to receive this scholarship. Not automatically renewable, but may be reawarded if the recipient continues to qualify.
Leroy L. Jochum Memorial Geology Scholarship

Criteria: Top junior geology scholarship, to be used during their senior year. May not be awarded to a graduating senior.
Walter F. Sill Geology Field Camp Award

  • Faculty to select
Criteria: Number of awards varies. Junior or senior geology majors with min 2.7 GPA who can produce confirmation of enrollment in a summer field camp at universities offering such camps. A short letter outlining courses taken, student leadership and extra-curricular activities, future plans in geology and career goals must be submitted. May resubmit, but not automatically renewable. May not be awarded to a graduating senior.
Walter F. Sill Memorial Academic Merit Award

Criteria: Merit award for Geology major who is a full-time or part-time student. Must have minimum 3.0 GPA and must have 45 USI credit hours with 9 credit hours in geology. Grades in Geology courses may be weighted. May not be awarded to a graduating senior. Recipient must be enrolled during the coming academic year in order to receive this scholarship. Not automatically renewable, but may be reawarded.
Walter F. Sill Memorial Promising Prospective Geology Student Scholarship

Criteria: To recruit mostly promising prospective geology students; Not renewable May not be awarded to a graduating senior. Recipient must be enrolled during the coming academic year in order to receive this scholarship.
Walter F. Sill Memorial Scholarship for Academic Achievement in Geology

  • Faculty to select
Criteria: Merit recognition for a full-time geology major to be used during junior or senior year. Renewable when minimum 3.25 GPA is maintained. Grades in Geology courses may be weighted. May not be awarded to a graduating senior. Recipient must be enrolled during the coming academic year in order to receive this scholarship.
Walter F. Sill Memorial Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Geology

  • Faculty to select
Criteria: Top Award to full-time geology majors with min 3.75 GPA to be used during senior year. Financial need may or may not be used as criteria. Grades in geology courses may be weighted..
