In addition to traditional career preparation, the Geosciences curriculum provides an overall understanding of our physical environment. It demonstrates the spatial and temporal vastness of the universe and the diversity of life through time, thereby offering a unique perspective on humankind's place in nature.

By emphasizing environmental applications of geology, the geology program for the major is designed to prepare students for the job market of the 21st century, regardless of cyclical employment patterns in the minerals industries. Nevertheless, the core geology program retains the traditional sequence of geology courses. Training in geology is supported by a broad base in mathematics, computer science, and allied sciences including chemistry and physics.

The Department of Geology and Physics weather station is located on the campus of USI and and continuously monitors the weather conditions through an automated computer program. The data are then uploaded to the web site for viewing, as well as archived on our system for research purposes.
