The Department of Geology and Physics has a number of scholarships and awards for students who have demonstrated high levels of academic performance, either as a student in high school or as a Geology major or as an Earth-Space Science teaching major. The scholarships are awarded by faculty review of potential recipients in the late fall/early spring of each academic year. Where indicated, students may be required to submit an application form to be eligible to receive the award.  The details of each award are listed below, along with links to the appropriate application forms, if required. Application forms for the Sill Field Camp award and the J.R. "Dick" Harris Scholarship are due to the Department Chair of Geology and Physics by January 22, 2010.

Walter F. Sill Memorial Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Geology

The top award given to full time Geology majors. Student must have a 3.75 GPA. Student must be a junior, and the award must be used during senior year.

Geology courses may be weighted. Financial need can be used as a factor.

Walter F. Sill Memorial Scholarship for Academic Achievement in Geology

$1000.00

Meritorious award given to full time Geology majors. Student must have a 3.25 GPA. Student must use award during either junior or senior year.

Award is renewable if 3.25 GPA is maintained when awarded as Junior. Geology courses may be weighted. Financial need can be used as a factor.

Walter F. Sill Memorial Scholarship for Academic Merit in Geology

$750.00

Meritorious award given to full-time or part-time Geology majors. Student must have a 3.00 GPA, and at least 45 USI credit hours, with at least 9 credit hours of geology coursework.

Geology courses may be weighted. Financial need can be used as a factor.

Walter F. Sill Memorial Promising Prospective Geology student Scholarship

Award given to a student who shows promise and interest in becoming a geology major

 

Walter F. Sill Geology Field Camp Award

up to $1500.00

Award given to Junior or Senior Geology majors with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Must submit an application FORM (pdf) that includes proof of enrollment in a summer Geological Field Camp at universities offering such courses. Awards can be weighted based on number of applicants, GPA and field camp costs. Word Document of FORM here

FORM (pdf) should also outline courses taken, why field camp is an important part of your curriculum, and what you plan to do with your geology degree. Call for applicants posted in early January. Multiple awards may be given.

J. R. Dick Harris Memorial Scholarship

$750.00

Award given to a geology major at USI with a minimum of 15 hours of completed Geology coursework and a cumulative GPA of 3.00. Must complete a FORM (pdf) that details your interest to apply of geological knowledge to Environmental, Petroleum or Business -related issues. Word Document of FORM here

Evansville Lapidary Society Scholarship

$200.00

Award given to an incoming Geology major or minor with a high school GPA equivalent to a B or to a student pursuing a secondary teaching curriculum in science with a primary emphasis of Earth and Space Science Teaching.

Financial need can be used as a factor.

Indiana Oil and Gas Association (INOGA) Scholarship

$1000.00

Award is given to an incoming student who plans to major in geology or to a student who is changing their major to geology program at USI with the hope that they will pursue a career in the Indiana oil and gas industry. Students must have a 3.0 GPA, or equivalent to be eligible.

Non-renewable; May be used for tuition, fees, and books. Preference will be given to children and stepchildren of members of the Indiana Oil & Gas Association and to children and stepchildren of oil and gas industry workers pursuing a geology degree.
