Earth/Space Science (Teacher certification)


Students who wish to become Earth/Space science teachers at the secondary school level should declare the Science Teaching major (see Bower-Suhrheinrich College of Education web page) and select either the single or dual licensure option for Earth/Space Science.

The content course requirements that lead to teaching licensure in Earth/Space science are as follows:

Single Licensure Option:
GEOL 161 Physical Geology 4 hours
GEOL 162 Historical Geology 4 hours
GEOL 234 Oceanography 3 hours
GEOL 301 Mineralogy 4 hours
GEOL 315 Paleontology 4 hours
AND
GEOL 407 Geomorphology OR
GEOL 441 Hydrogeology OR
GEOL 481 Advanced Environmental Geology
4 hours
AND
GEOG 214 Meteorology 3 hours
ASTR 201 General Astronomy 4 hours
AND
CHEM 175 Survey of Chemical Concepts OR
CHEM 261 General Chemistry
4 hours
AND
PHYS 175 General Physics 1 OR 4 hours
PHYS 205 Intermediate Physics I 5 hours
AND
MATH 230 Calculus 4 hours
AND
Any 300- or 400-level Geology course not already completed AND/OR
ASTR 471 Observational Astronomy
4 hours
AND at least one elective from the following:
GEOG 215 Climatology
MATH 271 Principles of Statistics
MATH 330 Calculus II
PHYS 176 General Physics II
PHYS 206 Intermediate Physics II
CHEM 262 General Chemistry II
ANTH 261 Intro to Archeology
BIOL 141 Principles of Biology
Any 300- or 400-level Geology course not already completed

Total credit hours range from a minimum of 49 to a maximum of 52 depending upon courses taken. Please be aware that upper level courses often have prerequisites that may not be in the list of required courses for the Earth Space Science Teaching certification
