The primary goals of the Department of Mathematics are to improve students' quantitative reasoning processes, their proficiencies with mathematical operations and their problem-solving capabilities.

Mathematical understanding is cultivated by a curriculum designed to assist students who are preparing for and pursuing a variety of career options.

Students majoring in quantitative technical areas select more rigorous upper-level electives. Experiences from these courses provide a foundation for understanding the applicability and power of mathematics to a variety of problems.

The content basis for the major is rooted in twelve hours of course work in calculus. A variety of courses that follow the calculus sequence are designed to prepare students for careers either as middle/secondary school teachers, for graduate school, or for entry-level jobs in business and industry.

Students are introduced to the various branches of mathematics: algebra, analysis, geometry, history, probability, statistics and applied mathematics. Topics are presented in each of these courses in a rigorous, traditional manner.

The Department of Mathematics is located on the upper level of the Science Center in SC 3255. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when the university is open.

The offices of the Chair and Academic Coordinator, as well as the offices of most mathematics faculty members, are located in this area.

Student records for mathematics majors and mathematics teaching majors, as well as informational materials for prospective students, are available for review.

Faculty members are available during their posted office hours to assist students. Current and prospective students are encouraged to meet with their instructors as necessary.

If you are interested in a major in mathematics or mathematics teaching, academic advisors are available to discuss the requirements of the major, as well as those of the University Core Curriculum.
