Mathematics Patterns for Prospective Elementary Teachers


Students seeking a degree in elementary and middle school education complete the following mathematics courses sequentially.
 

Required Courses
MATH 106 Introductory Mathematics Concepts for Teachers 3 hours
MATH 206 Mathematics Concepts for Elementary & Middle School Teachers 3 hours
MATH 226 Concepts in Geometry and Measurements for Elementary & Middle School Teachers 3 hours
MATH 392 The Teaching of Elementary School Mathematics 3 hours

NOTE: Elementary education majors admitted to the program prior to the fall semester of 2005 use the following sequence of courses:

Required Courses - (12 semester hours)
MATH 104 Basic Elementary Mathematics I 4 hours
MATH 204 Basic Elementary Mathematics II 3 hours
MATH 205 Computer Science for Teachers 2 hours
MATH 392 The Teaching of Elementary School Mathematics 3 hours


Elementary & Junior High/Middle School Mathematics Minor

Elementary Education majors seeking an elementary/junior high/middle school mathematics minor will complete the following courses for a minimum of 24 semester hours.  Students are encouraged to meet with an advisor in the Department of Mathematics early in the degree program.  Selected courses should provide a variety of concepts and experiences.
 
Required Courses (Students entering fall of 2005 and later)
MATH 106 Introductory Mathematics Concepts for Teachers 3 hours
MATH 206 Mathematics Concepts for Elementary & Middle School Teachers 3 hours
MATH 226 Concepts in Geometry and Measurements for Elementary & Middle School Teachers 3 hours
MATH 115 Precalculus OR MATH 118 College Algebra & Trigonometry 3-5 hours

Elective Courses 12 hours selected from the following:
MATH 213 Algebra for Middle School/Junior High Teachers 3 hours
MATH 236 Geometry for  Middle School/Junior High Teachers 3 hours
MATH 215 Survey of Calculus OR 3 hours
MATH 230 Calculus I 4 hours
MATH 241 Principles of Statistics 3 hours
MATH 253 Principles of Mathematical Logic 3 hours

Early Childhood Education

NOTE: Students seeking a degree in early elementary education admitted to the program beginning the fall semester of 2005 will take the following sequence of courses:

Required Courses
MATH 106 Introductory Mathematics Concepts for Teachers 3 hours
MATH 202 Mathematics Concepts for Early Elementary Teachers 3 hours
