Dr. Gene Freudenburg, Associate Professor of Mathematics, is the recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Professor Award.
Dr. Freudenburg is known both nationally and internationally for his research with commutative algebra and algebraic geometry; in particular his research centers around algebraic automorphisms of affine varieties, derivatives of polynomial rings, algebraic group actions and invariant theory. His accomplishments are documented by the publication of numerous research articles, by his pending book publication, by his research talks in The Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, Spain and Germany; by his visiting appointment in Basel, Switzerland; by his invitation to conduct research at the University of Bourgogne in Dijon, France, by his week in Lukecin, Poland conducting a workshop for graduate students in mathematics, and finally by his research project, Algebraic Automorphisms of Affine Space, supported by an NSF grant.
Dr. Freudenburg holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Valparaiso University, a Master of Science degree in mathematics from St. Louis University, and a PhD. in mathematics from Washington University. Before joining the faculty at USI in 1995, Dr. Freudenburg taught as an assistant professor at Ball State University.
The guidelines for the Distinguished Professor also note that the less tangible qualities of wisdom, sympathy, justice, integrity, courage, and the ability to inspire others should be true hallmarks of a faculty member's life. These qualities are evident in Dr. Freudenburg's day-to-day interactions with his students and his colleagues. In all of his classes, students are encouraged to think critically and to process information, using logical thought processes, algebraic skills and conceptual knowledge. He is a willing mentor for aspiring math students desiring to continue the study of mathematics at the graduate level and he never hesitates to assist junior faculty in the department.
The Distinguished Professor Award is made possible by a generous gift from Integra Bank. As Distinguished Professor, Dr. Freudenburg will receive a grant from Integra Bank, select a student to receive a scholarship in his name, and deliver the Distinguished Professor Lecture during the next academic year. The award recipient is chosen by faculty colleagues.
