Placement Testing for Mathematics

Every student pursuing a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Indiana must successfully complete the math component of the University Core Curriculum. The Department of Mathematics has mandatory placement for all entry-level courses in mathematics. The placement test or the Math SAT/ACT score is used to place a student into a math course; the placement test is not a mechanism for a student to test out of a course.

Some students may be exempt from taking a math placement test:

• A student who has a Math SAT score greater than or equal to 640 or a Math ACT score greater than or equal to 29.
• A student who has a Math SAT score greater than or equal to 600 or a Math ACT score of 26 or greater coupled with a high school grade point average of 3.0 or better out of a possible 4.0.

A student exempt from placement testing may self select the math course that best meets the requirements of his or her program of study. This decision will be made with the assistance of an advisor at your advising appointment during orientation. The Department of Mathematics (812/465-1689 or krodgers@usi.edu) is available to answer questions concerning the appropriate class or classes for individual students.

A student who does not meet one of the above requirements must take a math placement test. It is extremely important that one's best effort be given in taking this test; this score will determine the mandatory placement into an entry-level math course.

Transfer Students

All students entering USI for the first time without transfer credit to satisfy the mathematics component of the University Core Curriculum must take the math placement test prior to enrolling in a math course. Students with transfer credit for an intermediate algebra course from another institution will receive elective credits; however, the course will not be posted as Math 100. This policy is intended to help students succeed in mathematics courses at USI.  If a student has successfully completed an introductory course and has achieved mastery of the material, he or she should place into Math 108 or Math 111. If, however, the student has not retained the material, it will be necessary for him/her to take a lower-level course at USI to satisfy the prerequisite for a course such as Math 108 or Math 111.

The math placement test is administered through Academic Skills.
