Award. This award supports undergraduate research and is
given to a student in good standing who submits a successful
research proposal in collaboration with a sponsoring faculty
member. Under the direction of Dr. Eric McCloud, Robert will be
sequencing rDNA of an unknown fungus found exclusively in the Holly
Berry Midge, Asphondylia ilicicola.
The
Department of Mathematics welcomes:
Dr. Yalcin Sarol, who will be joining our department in the fall of 2006. Dr. Sarol holds both Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees in mathematics from Purdue University. Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, his research areas include probability and stochastic processes, as well as applications in financial mathematics. While at Purdue, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 and 2004, and the Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2002 and 2005. He has most recently taught as a post-doctoral assistant at Iowa State University. His research involves the use of fractional Brownian motion in stochastic analysis and applications.
Mrs. Heather Ervin, who returns for the fall 2006 semester after teaching in a temporary position at USI during the 2005-06 academic year. Mrs. Ervin holds a Master of Science degree in statistics from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Prior to her arrival in Evansville, she was a teaching assistant at Lehigh University and an actuarial intern with Geisinger Health Systems. Her areas of research include statistics and genetics, bioinformatics, data mining, functional genomics and DNA microarrays.
Ms. Mary Shen Knust,
who returns for the fall 2006 semester after teaching in a temporary position at USI during the 2005-06 academic year. Ms. Knust holds a Master of Science degree in theoretical mathematics from the University of Akron in Ohio, where she taught as a graduate teaching assistant and part-time mathematics instructor. Ms. Knust’s research is in integration on fractals and planar solidification.
Dr. Jon Stenerson, who will be joining our department as an assistant professor of mathematics. Dr. Stenerson holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky with major areas of emphasis in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Prior to his arrival at USI, he was a computer programmer at MacKichan Software/TCI Software Research in Las Cruces, New Mexico. His previous teaching positions were at Sul Ross State University, Minnesota State University and Transylvania University.
The
Department of Chemistry welcomes:
Dr. Ken Walsh, who will be joining our department in the fall of 2006. Dr. Walsh holds both Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees in organic chemistry from the University of Bristol (UK). Upon completion of his doctorate, Dr. Walsh received a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Emory University. He has most recently been a visiting assistant professor at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Dr Walsh’s research involves the syntheses of b-C-glycoside 2-amino sugars. These compounds are vital for cell recognition processes involving cell-cell recognition including immune system control, the initial contact of infectious disease, and the spread and detection of cancer cells.
The Department of Biology welcomes:
Dr. Rex Strange, who will be joining our department in the fall of 2006. Dr. Strange holds a Master of Science in Zoology from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Alabama. Prior to his position at USI, Dr. Strange has taught at Southeast Missouri State University. Most recently, Dr. Strange has worked as a Post-Doctoral Scholar and Research Associate in the Great Lakes Genetics Laboratory at the University of Toledo.
The Department of Geology and Physics welcomes:
Ms. Carrie Wright, who will be joining our department in the fall of 2006. Ms. Wright holds a Master of Science in geology from Miami University (Ohio) and a Master of Science in Teaching: Earth Science from Wright State University.
The Department of Geology and Physics would also like to congratulate Dr. Joe DiPietro who was recently promoted to Full Professor and Dr. Norm King, who has accepted the position of Department Chair of Geology and Physics.
The Department of Engineering welcomes:
Dr. Mamunur Rashid, who will be joining our department in the
fall of 2006, holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering
from the University of Utah and a Master of Science degree from
Idaho State University. Dr. Rashid was an adjunct faculty
member at Salt Lake Community College and a graduate research
assistant at the University of Utah. Dr. Rashid's field of
