The Department of Kinesiology and Sport supports the mission of the University of Southern Indiana and the POTT College of Science, Engineering and Education. The department provides students with a quality education based upon the acquisition of knowledge, skills and values that serve as the foundation for living and working in society. Through education, professional development, outreach and leadership opportunities, the department reinforces the student’s commitment to healthy living, continuing education, professional growth and societal involvement. The department core values empower student to live healthy, productive lives.
The Department of Kinesiology and Sport envisions a society in which all individuals enjoy an optimal quality of life through appreciation of and participation in an active and creative, health-promoting lifestyle. It envisions graduates with knowledge, skills and dispositions sufficient to advance professionally in their future.
The four core values listed and defined below serve as the benchmarks by which professional preparation programs are assessed and provide necessary data for revision.
Values Healthy Living – Students exhibit habits that are health-enhancing. Students maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness and participate regularly in meaningful physical activity (Physical Fitness Testing, Wellness Lifestyle & Exercise Adherence Survey).
Is Cognizant of Discipline – Students know the concepts and principles which underlie subject matter. They use this information to accomplish homework assignments, prepare reports, pass written exams and satisfy course and degree requirements for graduation (General Requirements, Program Requirements, Practicum).
Performs Tasks Specific to Professional Preparation Programs – Students can compete at a beginning, entry level as outlined by degree granting, licensing, accrediting or certifying agencies. Students can communicate and collaborate effectively, produce and evaluate work effectively in a professional environment (National Standards for Beginning Teachers, Indiana Professional Standards for Physical Education Teachers, Physical Education Skills and Knowledge, and Standards for Exercise Science & Physical Education Majors)
Is Involved in Continuing Professional Development Activities – Students advocate for the profession, are good role models, and participate in leadership activities while in college.
