Medical/Hospital/Clinical Internships



This facility provides wellness and fitness exams for over 180 fire, police, and sheriff departments across the state of Indiana and Ohio. During an internship students will gain hands-on experience in the areas of treadmill testing, ECG interpretation, body composition analysis, muscular strength and endurance testing, flexibility testing, and fitness consultations. Students may have the opportunity to be involved in research projects and data collection as well. For the services provided during the internship, each intern will also receive a $1000 stipend.

Fall, Spring, and Summer internships are available for students interested in a career with the Activities/Social Services departments of long-term care facilities. The intern will assist in developingand implementing a variety of activities that include each of Solarbron's six components of wellness including intellectual, occupational, emotional, spiritual, social, and physical. Essential duties and responsibilities include coordinating resident-centered activity programs and other related duties for both departments.

St. Mary's Cardiopulmonary Rehab
St. Mary's Heart Institute located in Evansville, IN offers an internship program for students with a goal of working towards their Bachelor's or Master's degree in exercise science, exercise physiology, or other related field. Students will receive extensive experience in phase II and phase III cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Our cardiopulmonary rehab program has over 400 patients enrolled. Students will also participate in patient education, patient assessment and community health screenings.

Observational experience will include stress testing, echocardiography, cat lab, nuclear medicine, EECP, CABG surgery, PFT studies, and Doppler studies. A shared internship with St. Mary's Health Matters Fitness Center may also be considered. An eight to sixteen week, hands-on internship is available every fall, spring, and summer. Requirements include academic courses/credit and current CPR certification.

Additional information

The internship program at Health Matters Center provides students with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of health, fitness and leadership skills while working within our fitness/wellness areas. The internship can be divided into three categories, Fitness Center, Health Promotion, or combination of both. The program is designed so that each intern can experience serving the health and wellness needs of St. Mary's employees and or the community. Practical experience in both the Fitness Center/Health Promotion areas include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Daily administration of the Health Matters Center including all fitness and wellness programming.
  • The St. Mary's Healthy Living wellness program including basic health screenings, health risk assessments and personal health coaching.
  • Disease management programming
  • Fitness assessment and exercise prescription
  • Development of incentive programs
  • Development of projects for and participation in community health fairs
  • Corporate wellness experience

Job Title: Fitness Specialist/Personal Trainer Internship
Department: Center for Fitness & Performance

Job Duties: Operate all cardiovascular and weight training equipment, demonstrate ability to take accurate pulse and blood pressure, demonstrate consistent knowledge of basic assessment and processing of height, weight, BP, body fat, circumference, flexibility tests, grip strength, health history and prescreening paperwork. Identify high health risk members according to guidelines and follow proper procedures for medical release. Assist clientele with health and fitness goals and properly aid in individualized exercise prescription, properly monitor clientele for warning and/or danger signs. Motivate clientele with positive feedback, encouragement, and documented progress.

Qualifications: Exercise Science Major or equivalent field of study, willingness to attend orientation program for areas in job duties, current CPR & AED certification or willingness to obtain certification within one month of joining staff.

The Lutheran Hospital of Indiana provides an internship program in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation. The clinical appointment is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate students in Exercise Physiology or related majors to the practical applications of exercise in the clinical setting. If a USI student is selected for this opportunity they must notify Career Services Our interns work in an independent environment that allows them to learn the responsibilities of running a screening center and coordinating community education events.

Heart Center interns also will:

- be certified to perform a finger stick blood collection procedure

- work with patients one-on-one in a clinical setting collecting blood pressure and biometric results

- shadow and work hands-on in other areas of the hospitals

- assist with Go Red for Women and Heart Walk events as well as other community events

- be exposed to the areas of business development and marketing.

Interns work in a normal office environment and the dress is business casual. Interns work approximately 30 to 40 hours per week. A stipend of $2,000 will be awarded for after the completion of the semester.

Applicants must be enrolled in their final year of their academic degree program of:

- Community health

- Exercise science

- Health promotions

- Fitness studies

- Other related areas of study.
