Dr.
R. Brent Summers is the Assistant Dean of the Pott College of Science
and Engineering and Associate Professor of Biology.
After his service in the Army and Indiana Army National Guard, Dr.
Summers’ college career began in his hometown of New Albany, Indiana,
where he attended Indiana University Southeast. Dr. Summers earned his
Bachelor of Arts in Biology (1993), Master of Science in Biology (1995),
and Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Biology (1999) degrees at the
University of Louisville.
While at the University of Louisville, Dr. Summers studied physiology,
invertebrate zoology, and aquatic ecology at the graduate level. He
joined the faculty of Campbellsville University in 1999 and was named
chair of the Division of Natural Science in 2002, serving as the
Division Chair for three years. The Division of Natural Science included
the disciplines of Geology, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
After
joining the University of Southern Indiana in 2005, Dr. Summers taught
Biology as Assistant Professor until his recent promotions to Associate
Professor of Biology and the Assistant Dean of the Pott College of
Science and Engineering in August 2010.
In addition to his
teaching responsibilities, Dr. Summers serves as the program director of
the Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine program, advisor to students in
pre-medicine, and also as the co-coordinator of the Presidential Scholar
program. Since the summer of 2009, Dr. Summers has served as a faculty
mentor in the Pott College's Southwest Indiana STEM Early Undergraduate
Research Program, which is funded by a portion of a grant from the
National Science Foundation, giving students the opportunity to gain
experience while serving as research assistants within the ongoing
research projects in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics) at USI.
In his career, Dr. Summers has received numerous grants, including those
recently from the Vanderburgh County Soil and Water Conservation
District, the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and other
organizations. Dr. Summers
has served as principal investigator for a number of projects, has
numerous publications, and leads many workshops offering professional
development for teachers in STEM fields.
Dr. Summers is currently a member of the Indiana Academy of Science
where he serves as the Liaison to the American Association for the
Advancement of Science (AAAS) and to the National Association of
Academies of Science (NAAS).
He has served as Ecology section chair for IAS for two years, is a
member of the ecological Society of America (ESA), The American Society
of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), and the North American
Benthological Society (NABS).
