Academic Programs
Bachelor of Social Work
- To prepare students for "generalist" bachelor level professional social work practice directed toward individuals, families, small groups, organizations, communities, and the greater society in a variety of settings with diverse client populations.
- To prepare students for a continuous process of self and professional growth through instilling and strengthening a social work value system.
- To ensure that students possess a solid educational foundation in order to examine and resolve problems through a problem solving approach utilizing a variety of knowledge and skills through a "systems" perspective.
- To educate individuals to think critically regarding human issues, social policies, and social welfare institutions.
- To prepare students to have a positive impact on the environment around them through the development of knowledge, values, and skills inherent in social work practice.
- To develop within students an understanding and appreciation of the diversity within human behavior (i.e. cultural, ethnic, racial).
- To provide students with an overall appreciation and understanding of human micro and macro systems, including the various influences and interrelatedness between systems.
- To develop a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that enable students to function successfully in graduate education.
- To participate in the enhancement of social work skills, knowledge, and educational levels of individuals within the area served by the University.
- To serve as a social work resource center for individuals, social work professional groups, institutions, social service agencies, and communities within the University service area.
- To practice in the role of a professional generalist bachelor's level social worker.
- To assist individuals to identify processes that affect their lives.
- To create a positive, trusting environment for clients to effect change in their lives.
- To plan and implement an effective and viable social work intervention at the micro and macro levels.
- To become active in community systems that effect policy change to promote effective social change.
- To demonstrate continuous evaluation of personal and professional growth.
- To serve as an advocate and broker linking people to community agencies.
- To demonstrate the upholding of standards and values in social work practice.
- To actively engage in a process of continued professional growth and development.
- To recognize, appreciate, and evaluate the dynamics of individuals in their social networks.
- To assist social services to be fair and responsible to all people in an equitable manner.
- To serve as a catalyst for response services that provides equality for all groups.
- To understand the cultural diversity of client populations and to practice with an "ethnic-sensitive" orientation.
- To provide skills for individuals to effectively solve their own problems utilizing internal and external resources.
- To monitor areas of need for continued professional training for one's self.
- To work to improve the delivery of services to people in need.
