USI baseball bows out in
12-inning marathon
Univ. of Indianapolis 4, Univ. of Southern Indiana 3 (12-innings)
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team bowed out
of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in a marathon 12-inning loss to
the University of Indianapolis, 4-3. The Screaming Eagles finish the season with
a 28-29 record.
The star of the game for the Eagles was senior right-hander Kylan Stuck (Carmel, Indiana), who struck out 11 batters in going the
distance. Stuck went 11 1/3 innings, allowing ten hits and four runs (two
earned) in taking the loss.
“Stuck's performance today was one of the best in the
history of the USI program,” said USI Head Coach Mike Goedde.
“He did everything he needed to do today, except get the victory. It is the
type of performance you want in the final game of your collegiate career.”
After allowing three runs, two unearned, in the fourth
inning, Stuck set down 24 of the next 28 hitters in the Indianapolis line-up.
The Greyhounds finally got to Stuck in the bottom of the 12th when
they strung two singles and a double together to score the winning run.
Trailing 3-1, the Eagles sent the game into extra innings by
scoring two in the top of the ninth. Junior centerfielder Marcus
Renn (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) drove in junior designated hitter Brian
Branson (Mt. Vernon) to make the score 3-2, while junior
leftfielder Neil Duckworth (Henderson, Kentucky) sent
freshman rightfielder Tobby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana)
across with the third USI run to tie the game 3-3.
USI was led by a pair with three hits each. Branson finished
the day three-for-six with a run scored and a double, while sophomore shortstop Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) was
three-for-five. Perkins finished the year with the team’s top batting average
at .393 (77-196) and hit safely in 45 of 52 games this spring.
