USI splits with IPFW in baseball

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split with Indiana University/Purdue University Ft. Wayne, Sunday afternoon in Ft. Wayne. USI, whose record goes to 14-12 overall and 5-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference, lost game one 10-0, but bounced back in game two 11-4. IPFW goes to 7-14-1 overall and 1-5 in the North Division of the GLVC.

In the game two victory, USI was led by sophomore rightfielder Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) who was three-for-five with three RBIs and a runs scored to go with a home run, his third of the season. Konopacki was joined in hitting the long ball by junior third baseman Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), who hit his third of the season while going two-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) picked up his first victory of the season, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing only four hits, two runs (one earned), and three walks while striking out four. Junior right-hander Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his second save of the season, working the final 3 1/3 innings. Arnold allowed three hits and two runs while striking out three.

In game one down 3-0 in the sixth, USI allowed seven IPFW tallies as the Mastodons put the game away 10-0.

The next action for the Screaming Eagles will be Tuesday, April 3, in a 1 p.m. make-up contest with Indiana University Southeast. USI will resume GLVC action Wednesday, April 4, when Southern Illinois University Edwardsville comes to Evansville for a 3 p.m. contest.
