The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Lewis University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field, winning game one 7-5 and falling in the nightcap 7-3. USI’s record goes to 16-17 overall, 6-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lewis goes to 18-18 overall, 4-7 GLVC.
USI was led in the game one victory by sophomore second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana), sophomore designated hitter Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana), and sophomore rightfielder Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana). Schiff was two-for-four with three runs scored while Perkins was two-for-three with a run scored and one RBI.
Konopacki, who was one-for-two with a walk, had the big hit of the game for the Eagles with a three-run triple in the fourth inning.
Senior right-hander Kylan Stuck (Carmel, Indiana) picked up his fifth win of the year (5-3), going 5 2/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs, while striking out eight. Senior left-hander Aaron Piening (Indianapolis, Indiana) picked up his first save of the season, throwing one pitch to end the game.
The Eagles fell in game two as four USI pitchers gave up seven runs, six earned runs. USI hurlers also allowed seven walks in the nine-inning contest. Offensively, the Eagles could only produce three runs. Schiff, Perkins, and Piening led the Eagles in the nightcap with two hits apiece.
The next action for the Eagles will be on the road Wednesday, April 11, at Oakland City University for a single game starting at 2 p.m. USI will return to the USI Baseball Field for three conference games next weekend, hosting Quincy University April 13-14.
