USI baseball pounds out 17 hits in 13-8 win

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team pounded out a 13-8 road victory over Oakland City University Wednesday afternoon. USI raised its record to the .500 mark at 17-17 overall, while OCU falls to 8-17 in 2001.

USI had four players with at least three hits in the game, led by sophomore second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore leftfielder Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana), who were four-for-six and four-for-five respectively. Schiff scored four runs, had four RBIs, and a double, while Perkins scored a run and drove in more.

Junior third baseman Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), who was three-for-six, had the big clout for the Eagles with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Freshman designated hitter Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) also picked up three hits in five at-bats, scoring two runs.

On the mound, first-year right-hander Mike Schrader (Covington, Indiana) picked up his second win of the season in relief of freshman right-hander Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana). Schrader relieved Neel in the fifth inning and only allowed a run in 1 2/3 innings. Neel gave up six runs (five earned) in the first 4 1/3, allowing 10 hits.

Sophomore right-hander Dustin Macke (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his third save of the season, tops on the team. Macke worked the final three innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, and a walk while striking out two.

The Screaming Eagles will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday, April 13, when Quincy University visits the USI Baseball Field to begin a three-game series. The Eagles and the Hawks will play a doubleheader Friday, beginning at noon, and complete the series with a single game Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m.
