The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored runs in the final innings of both the first and second game to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader this afternoon at Saint Joseph’s College. The Screaming Eagles raise their record to 13-11 overall, 4-1 in the GLVC, with the victories.
USI scored three runs off four hits and two SJC errors, in the top half of the final inning, to come out with a 5-3 victory in game one. The Eagles, on the strength of a three-for-four and two-RBI performance from designated hitter Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), pounded out 10 hits including three doubles to overcome the 3-2 deficit.
USI’s Kylan Stuck (Carmel, Indiana) went the distance, giving up three runs off seven hits, to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Stuck struck out eleven batters in the seven inning contest.
The Eagles, again, came back in the final inning of game two. Down 2-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth, USI’s third baseman, Justin Ambs (Zionsville, Indiana), drove a ball, which was misplayed, to leftfield to score senior Aaron Piening (Indianapolis, Indiana) and sophomore Neil Duckworth (Henderson, Kentucky) and give the Eagles the 3-2 lead.
Senior Jay Winters (Shawneetown, Illinois) pitched all nine innings, giving up just two runs off six hits and striking out seven batters, to raise his record to 6-0 on the season. Sophomore Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) extended his school-record hitting streak to 21 games.
