USI baseball splits with 10th ranked Indianapolis
Game
1: #10 Indianapolis 9, @Southern Indiana 2
Game 2: @Southern Indiana 4, #10 Indianapolis 3
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split with the 10th ranked University of Indianapolis at the USI Baseball Field Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds took the first game 9-2, but the Screaming Eagles bounced back in game two, 4-3. USI goes to 23-22 overall, 12-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Indianapolis goes to 37-12 overall, 18-3 GLVC.
USI picked up the win in game two on the strong arm of senior right-hander Jay Winters (Shawneetown, Illinois), who raised his record to a team-high 7-2. Winters went all nine innings, allowing seven hits, three unearned runs, and struck out four.
At the plate, USI jumped out to a 3-1 lead after five innings, but Indianapolis tied the game at three each with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Greyhounds finished their part of the sixth when USI sophomore right-fielder Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) threw out first baseman Peter Babcock at the plate. Babcock was ejected on the play for colliding with USI senior catcher Greg Baisden (Schererville, Indiana). Indianapolis finished the second game under protest because of the ejection.
The Eagles scored the winning run in the seventh. Konopacki walked to open the frame and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by senior first baseman Aaron Piening (Indianapolis, Indiana). Konopacki then scored on a single by junior third baseman Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana).
Game one saw the Greyhounds put up two runs in the second, the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh for the 9-2 victory. USI senior right-hander Kylan Stuck (Carmel, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs (six earned) and four walks while striking out four.
The next action for the Eagles will be on the road Tuesday, April 24, at Indiana University-Southeast in New Albany, Indiana. The doubleheader will begin at noon. USI will return home for the final four home games of the season, taking on Oakland City University at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26, before hosting Bellarmine University for a three game series Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29, at noon each day.
