The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped a pair non-conference games at NAIA 16th ranked McKendree College this afternoon. The Screaming Eagles committed three errors and gave up 14 runs off 10 hits in game one and gave up eight runs off eight hits in game two.
Junior hurler Mike Schreader (Covington, Indiana) dropped to 2-2 on the year after giving up six runs on four hits through two-and-two-thirds innings pitched. Center fielder Marcus Renn (Henderson, Kentucky) went two-for-three, with a double and a run scored, while sophomore left fielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) went one-for-three with a team-high three RBIs in the 14-7 game-one loss.
USI gave up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning of game two, but made a valiant comeback, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning and two more in the top of seventh. The Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh but were unable to push the tying run across as they fell, 8-7, and dropped to 20-19 on the season.
Sophomore Dustin Macke (Evansville, Indiana) gave up seven runs off six hits in the first inning, but rebounded to hold the Bearcats to a run off two hits in the final five innings. Despite the turn around, Macke was charged with his fourth loss of the season.
Nucci continued his hot hitting in game two as he went two-for-two, with two runs scored and a RBI, while junior third baseman Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) went two-of-four from the plate with a pair of runs batted in.
USI will turn its attention to 25th ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The two teams will take the field for a GLVC doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Edwardsville, Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. SIUE defeated the Eagles, 6-3, earlier this month.
