The University of Southern Indiana baseball team overcame a 5-1 deficit in game two to earn a split with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Rivermen won the first game, 10-3, but USI scored four times in the seventh to win the nightcap, 6-5.
Down 5-2 in the seventh inning of game two, junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) did the job offensively for the Eagles. Konopacki doubled in three runs with two outs to tie the game 5-5 before scoring the winning run on a single by junior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri).
Junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) also had a big game at the plate in game two, picking up three hits and scoring three times.
Sophomore right-hander Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) picked up his second victory of the week in relief, going 4 1/3 innings. Neel allowed only two hits and struck out two before giving way to junior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana), who picked up his second save of the week. Neel goes to 2-2, while the save was the third of the season for Johnson.
Defensive woes hurt the Eagles in game one, committing four errors and allowing six unearned runs. The Rivermen took a commanding 8-1 lead after three innings, capitalizing on the USI miscues.
USI junior right-hand Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing five hits, eight runs (two earned), and hit three UMSL batters. Baker falls to 2-3 this spring.
Kohler led USI offensively in game one, going two for three with two RBIs and a double.
The next action for the Eagles at the USI Baseball Field will be Saturday, April 6, when they host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in a doubleheader beginning at noon. The two teams will finish the three-game series Sunday, April 7, at SIUE. Game time Sunday in Edwardsville is 1 p.m.
