Eagles blast Grenadiers 5-4
Southern Indiana (16-23): 5
Indiana Southeast (20-19): 4
University of Southern Indiana junior designated hitter Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) hit a two-run blast in the seventh inning to help propel the Screaming Eagles to a 5-4 victory over Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Indiana, Tuesday afternoon. USIís record climbs to 16-23 overall, while IUS falls to 20-19.
The Eagles took the lead 4-3 on Owenís home run and added an insurance run to complete the three-run seventh off the bat of junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana). Konopackiís triple drove in junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) for USIís fifth run of the game and the margin of victory.
IUS took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first before USIís junior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) tied the game with a solo home run to leftfield in the second inning. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the sixth before the Grenadiers retook the lead with a pair tallies in the bottom half of the inning, setting the stage for USIís three-run seventh.
USI junior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) got the start for the Eagles and picked up his second win of the season. Johnson (2-3) allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out five in 7 1/3 innings of work.
The Grenadiers made one final charge at the Eagles with a run in the eighth before USI sophomore right-hander Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) took over for Johnson. Neel put out the fire in the eighth and finish the game for his first save of the year, allowing one hit over 1 2/3 innings of relief.
The Eagles will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference action Wednesday, April 17, when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College in a noon doubleheader. The home games will be the first for the Eagles in 10 days.
