Arnold named GLVC Pitcher of the Week
University of Southern Indiana senior right-handed pitcher Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after throwing two complete game victories. Arnold is the first USI baseball player to be named Pitcher of the Week.
Arnold began by holding the University of Missouri-St. Louis to one run over nine innings and a one-hour rain delay to pick up his third victory of the season. He allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out five Rivermen batters.
On USI’s Senior Day, the Harrison High School graduate battled through nine innings to defeat Saint Joseph’s College and get his fourth victory of the spring. Arnold, who got out of a base-loaded and nobody-out second inning jam without a run being scored, allowed just eight hits and three runs in the complete game performance.
Arnold’s statistics in the two games were 18 innings, 11 hits, four runs (three earned), three walks, and six strikeouts. The 2-0 record last week raised his season mark to 4-5.
After starting the season 1-5, Arnold has had the hot hand for the Screaming Eagles in his last four starts, posting three nine-inning complete game victories. He has allowed just 21 hits and 9 runs (four earned) in his last 31 2/3 innings on the mound. The right-hander has a 1.15 ERA and struck out eight in the four-game run. The Eagles are 6-1 in the last seven games that Arnold has appeared as a starter or out of the bullpen.
USI will finish the 2002 regular season on Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, in the Mercyhurst University Classic. The squad will play Mercyhurst and the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown once each day.
