USIís Neel throws no-hitter,
Eagles paste Brescia, 11-0
University of Southern Indiana (4-2): 11
@Brescia University (6-5): 0
University of Southern Indiana baseball junior hurler Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) threw a no-hitter to lead the Screaming Eagles to an 11-0 win over Brescia University Thursday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. Neel allowed just three base runners through seven innings as he improved his record to 2-0 on the season. The game was called after the seventh inning.
The no-hitter was the first by a USI hurler since 1994 when former USI standouts Kadish Evans and Craig Schoobridge tossed consecutive no-hitters.
The Eagles (4-2) put their first run of the game up on the board when senior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) drove in sophomore outfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) in the first inning.
After three straight scoreless innings, the Eagles exploded for six runs off five hits and an error fifth inning, knocking the Bearcatsí starter, Jason Staples, out of the contest. Konopacki drove in the first run of the inning and senior outfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) connected on a two-run shot to cap off the scoring in the inning.
USI tattooed Brescia for four more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Once again, Konopacki started the scoring with a two-run single. For the game, Konopacki went 3-for-4 with three singles, a run scored, and four RBIs.
The Eagles finished the contest with 11 hits en route to their second consecutive shutout-USI blanked Oakland City University, 5-0, this past Tuesday.
USI will start its spring trip this Saturday, March 8, with a doubleheader at the State University of West Georgia. The Eagles will wrap up their spring at Presbyterian College on Friday, March 14, and will return home Monday, March 17, to take on Indiana University-Southeast in a tentative make-up game. First-pitch for IUS contest is to be determined.
Brescia falls to 6-5 with the loss.
