Eagles squander pair of leads in late innings,
Fall to 29th-ranked South Carolina-Aiken in 10th inning
@ #29 University of South Carolina-Aiken (14-9): 10
University of Southern Indiana (5-5): 9 (10 innings)
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team saw a four-run lead evaporate and then a two-run lead fall by the wayside as it fell to the University of South Carolina-Aiken, 10-9, Monday night at J. H. Satcher Field in Aiken, South Carolina. The Screaming Eagles fall to 5-5 overall while the Pacers improve to 14-9 on the season.
USI jumped out two a big lead early on, claiming four runs in the top of the second inning. Senior outfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) led the inning off with a one-out double down the leftfield line. Freshman infielder Brent Perry (Versailles, Indiana) knocked Owen and junior designated hitter Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois) in with a double down the leftfield line.
Senior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by sophomore shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana). Perry eventually capped off the scoring in the inning on a balk by USC-Aiken hurler Harold Sofield.
Owen led off the top of the third inning with a solo shot to right field, extending USIís lead to 5-0.
After allowing a pair of Pacer runs in the bottom half of the third inning, the Eagles struck back in the top of the fifth with a pair of doubles and a run to put the Eagles back up four. Once again, Owen doubled, this time to right-centerfield, and came around to score off Kohlerís double down the leftfield line.
The Pacers tacked on another run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but USIís Goers answered with a solo homerun to left-centerfield to put the Eagles up 7-3.
USC-Aiken tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth inning with a two-out solo home run by freshman outfielder Chris Sheehan.
After going 0-for-5,USI senior infielder Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) blasted a two-out triple deep into centerfield to drive in sophomore outfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana), giving the Eagles a 9-7 lead in the top of the 10th inning.
However, with one out and runners at second and third, USC-Aikenís Ashley Farr hit a three-two pitch into the centerfield bleachers to give the Pacers the 10-9 win and hand the Eagles their third straight loss.
Freshman left-hander Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up the walk-off home run. It was the first batter Hutton has faced in his collegiate career.
Senior hurler Dan Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) threw six innings for the Eagles, giving up four runs off eight hits in his first start of the season.
The Eagles will return to action Tuesday, March 11, to take on Augusta State University. First-pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. in Augusta, Georgia.
