USI baseball opens GLVC home schedule this weekend
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team opens its Great Lakes Valley Conference home schedule with the University of Indianapolis Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch will be thrown both days at noon.
The first three games of the four-game series will be counted as GLVC games. The nightcap of Sunday’s double-header will be a non-conference game.
The Screaming Eagles are on a four-game winning streak after starting the 2003 GLVC schedule with a 7-0 road victory over Bellarmine University Thursday afternoon. The Eagles were led by senior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana), who went all nine innings and allowed just six hits.
Anderson was supported offensively by senior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana), and sophomore designated hitter Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) with a pair of RBIs each.
For the season, sophomore infielder/pitcher Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) leads the Eagles with a .381 average. Senior third baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) is tops on the USI squad with 12 RBIs, while senior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) has hit a team-best three home runs.
Senior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) has started the year by extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Kohler, who started the streak with his final appearance of 2002, is hitting .378 in 2003 with a team-high four triples in 12 games for USI. Konopacki follows Kohler with an eight-game streak, while Keener enters the weekend with a seven-game streak.
On the mound, Keener leads the staff with a 1.64 ERA in two appearances this year. Anderson has a team-best 4-1 record and is second with a 2.31 ERA this spring.
The Greyhounds of Indianapolis come to Evansville ranked 18th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America Top 25 and 22nd in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Top 30. Indianapolis is 2-1 in the GLVC after taking two of three from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and is 11-4 overall.
Indianapolis junior first baseman Zac Boulund leads the way with a .353 batting average, three home runs, and 15 RBIs. He is followed by senior outfielder Matt Guarnieri, who is hitting .333 with 12 RBIs this spring.
On the mound, senior right-hander and 2002 first team All-GLVC Blake Wyatt is tops on the staff with a 3-0 record and a 0.90 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Gary Mauer follows Wyatt on the mound with a 2-0 record and a 2.12 ERA.
The Greyhounds enter the season with a 30-22 lead in the series with USI. Indianapolis also swept the doubleheader with the Eagles last season.
