Southern Indiana (13-15, 5-7 GLVC): 6 @SIU Edwardsville (13-14, 7-9 GLVC): 3
The name of the game was pitching as University of Southern Indiana senior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) and sophomore right-hander Matt Keener (Evansville, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles to a doubleheader sweep of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday afternoon in Edwardsville, Illinois. USI, which swept its first doubleheader of the spring, won the first game 4-2 and the second game 6-3.
The three-game series switches to the USI Baseball Field Sunday, April 6. The first pitch for the series finale between USI and SIUE will be at 1 p.m.
Anderson picked up his team-best fifth victory of the year in the opener. The left-hander, who raised his record to 5-3 in 2003, went 6 2/3 innings, scattered 10 hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out four. Senior right-hander Dan Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) picked up his second save of the year, needing just one pitch after inheriting a two-out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.
At the plate, USI scored one in the second, the fourth, the sixth, and the seventh to win 4-2. Senior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) started the scoring in the second inning with his fifth home run of the year to give USI a 1-0 lead in the second. Keener also chipped in going three-for-three with a run scored.
Moving to the mound in nightcap, Keener raised his 2003 record to a perfect 3-0 with a nine-inning complete game 6-3 victory. The right-hander also scattered 10 hits, but allowed just three runs (two earned) and struck out nine. The nine strikeouts was a season-best for Keener.
Offensively in the nightcap, the Eagles did all of their scoring in the later innings. USI tied the game in the fifth and took the lead for good with a three-run sixth. The sixth was highlighted by a two-run triple by sophomore center Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana). USI finished the scoring with a pair of tallies in the eighth.
Owen once again led the Eagles at the plate, going two-for-four with two runs scored, a double, a triple, and three RBIs. Wetzel went one better at the dish, going three-for-four with the two RBIs on the sixth inning three-bagger.
Sunday’s series finale will be the start of a seven-game homestand for the Eagles. In addition to Sunday’s game with SIUE, USI will host Bellarmine University for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 9 Oakland City University Thursday, April 10 and Lewis University Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, for a three-game series.
