@Oakland City (8-19): 19 Southern Indiana (15-19): 14
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not overcome an 11-run fourth inning explosion by Oakland City University, losing 19-14 to the Mighty Oaks Tuesday afternoon in Oakland City, Indiana. USI falls to 15-19 overall, while OCU goes to 8-19.
The Mighty Oaks scored 11-times in the fourth inning off of three USI hurlers. OCU pushed 11 tallies across the plate on eight hits and four walks.
USI led twice in the game, taking a 3-1 lead with three runs in the second and a 6-3 lead with three more in the third. After the Mighty Oaks took a 14-6 lead in the fourth, they built the lead to 15-6 with a home run in the fifth.
The Eagles narrowed the lead to 15-9 with another trio of runs in the sixth. OCU responded with three tallies of their own to make the lead 18-9 before USI made its final push in the seventh. The Eagles had their four-run rally in the seventh stopped on a bases loaded one-two-three double play.
Three players with multiple hits led USI Tuesday. Senior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) scored four times after going two-for-three, walked twice, and was hit by a pitch. Sophomore centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) started the game going two-for-three with two runs scored. Junior leftfielder Adam Anderson (Raleigh, Illinois) subbed in for Wetzel and went three-for-three with a pair of RBIs.
The Eagles will continue action Wednesday, April 16, at the USI Baseball Field when Brescia comes to Evansville for a nine-game. USI will continue Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, at Quincy University.
