Eagles win on the road
Southern Indiana (18-23): 11 @Indiana Southeast (9-25): 7
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team recorded a non-conference win with an 11-7 victory over Indiana University Southeast Tuesday afternoon in New Albany, Indiana. The Eagles, who swept the two games with IUS this year, raised their record to 18-23 overall in 2003.
USI opened the scoring the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by sophomore leftfielder Adam Anderson (Raleigh, Illinois). Andersonís shot drove in sophomore centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana), who had doubled to start the game.
The Eagles followed the first inning rally with four runs in the second, two in the third, and three in the sixth.
At the plate, USI was led by Anderson with three hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Senior rightfielder Justin Konopakci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) joined Anderson in getting three hits and scoring twice.
On the mound, freshman right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) had his longest outing of the year in recording his second win. Goans, 2-2 this spring, went 8 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out four. Freshman right-hander Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana) and freshman left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) combined to get the last two outs in the ninth.
The Eagles will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference action Wednesday, April 23, when Kentucky Wesleyan College comes to USI for the finale of the 2003 three-game series. Game time is 3 p.m. Wednesday. KWC won the first two games, sweeping a doubleheader back in March, 2-1 and 6-5.
USI will finish its streak of five games in four days Thursday, April 24, when it travels to Oakland City University for a 2 p.m. contest.
