Eagles still in the hunt for GLVC Tournament berth
A good week for the University of Southern Indiana baseball team and some help from other Great Lakes Valley Conference teams could still reserve the Screaming Eagles a spot in the conference post-season tournament. USI enters the week with a 22-24 overall record and an 11-14 GLVC mark and is three-games back of the final tournament slot.
This week, USI will play a noon doubleheader Wednesday, April 30, at University of Missouri-St. Louis and a three-game series at the USI Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, against Northern Kentucky University. The first pitch for the three-game series with NKU will be noon each day.
The Eagles have won six of their last eight games and were 4-2 in the GLVC last week.
Senior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) led the Eagles with a .520 batting average with eight runs scored, three triples, a home run, and six RBIs. Senior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) was USIís top hurler with a 2-0 record and a 2.87 ERA. Anderson also held opposing hitters to a low .190 batting average.
For the season, Owen is tops on the team with a .348 batting average, 40 runs scored, 11 doubles, eight triples, and seven home runs. He also has driven in 33 RBIs.
Anderson leads the team in wins with a 7-4 record and is second on the squad with a 2.95 ERA in 13 appearances and 79.1 innings pitched. Sophomore right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) follows Anderson with a 4-0 record and a team-best 2.35 ERA in seven games and 46.0 innings pitched.
Keener, who also is hitting .322 with 22 RBIs, is second on the team with 30 strike outs. Junior right-hander Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) has posted a team-best 40 strikeouts this spring.
USI needs to start this weekís games with at least a split at GLVC-leading Missouri-St. Louis, which is 30-13 overall and 17-7 in the league. The Eagles, who lead the series with UMSL, 22-20, took the first meeting of the year with a 5-4 victory at the USI Baseball Field.
The Rivermen are led by senior outfielder Jim Reiter. Reiter is hitting .395 with 47 runs scored, nine doubles, five triples, three home runs, and 35 RBIs. Senior outfielder/catcher Jason Barron is tops on the UMSL roster with six home runs, while junior outfielder Logan Hughes has a team-best 42 RBIs.
On the mound, sophomore left-hander Matt Kueny has a team-best 6-1 record for the Rivermen. Senior right-hander Bobby Tiefenauer follows Kueny with a 5-0 record, while senior right-hander Greg Bierling is 5-1. Sophomore right-hander Colby Hughes is the Rivermenís best out of the bullpen, boosting a 4-1 record with a 2.40 ERA and three saves.
The Eagles will finish the regular season at the USI Baseball Field by hosting the three-game series with NKU. USI leads the series with the Norse, 34-22. The Norse start the week with a 23-22 overall record and a 14-13 mark in the GLVC.
At the plate, senior third baseman and former USI student athlete Josh Perkins leads the Norse with a .390 batting average. He also has produced 22 runs, five doubles, a home run, and 23 RBIs.
