USI baseball ends 2003 with a victory
@Southern Indiana (24-27, 13-17 GLVC): 8 Northern Kentucky (28-24, 15-15 GLVC): 4
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team ended the 2003 season with a soggy 8-4 victory over Northern Kentucky University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI finishes 2003 with a 24-27 overall record, 13-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The game was called in the bottom of the seventh due to rain. The Norse had closed the gap to 8-7 in the top of the inning, but because the inning was not completed the score reverted to previous inning.
The Screaming Eagles had to come-from-behind twice to earn the victory. NKU lead 2-0 after an inning-and-a-half before USI tied the score with a tally in the second and the fifth.
The Norse regained its two-run advantage in the top of the sixth before the Eagles exploded for six runs to take an 8-4 lead. The big hits of the inning were a three-run double by senior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) to give USI a 6-4 lead and a two-run single by senior third baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) to cap-off the scoring at 8-4.
Nucci finished his career at USI by going three-for-four with two runs scored, a double, and three RBIs.
Earning a complete game and the victory on the mound was senior right-hander Dan Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana). Tomashek, 3-4 this spring, allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings.
