USI baseball splits doubleheader with Lewis

Evansville, IN The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored four times in the top of the tenth to win the nightcap of a doubleheader, 8-4, and a earn split with Lewis University Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois. USI, which dropped the first game 6-2, goes to 6-15 overall and 2-6 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 7-10, 1-1 GLVC.

In the nightcap, the Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two-and-a half innings. The three-run first inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by junior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana).

Lewis responded to the 4-0 USI lead with two in the third and single run tallies in the fifth and sixth innings. The two teams finished nine inning tied 4-4, setting the stage for the USI 10th.

With one out, junior short stop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored the game winner on a pass ball to give USI a 5-4 lead. The Eagles would go on to score three more insurance runs for the 8-4 final.

On the mound, freshman Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) picked up his second win of the year in relief. Clark went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and struck out four.

He relieved junior pitcher Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana), who got the no-decision after going 6 2/3 innings of work. Fadde allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits while striking out two.

In the opener, a four-run sixth inning doomed the Eagles in the 6-2 loss. USI jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 2-1 through four-and-a-half innings. The Flyers scored one in the fifth and claimed the victory with four runs the next inning.

Junior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) dropped to 1-2 for USI, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out four. Sophomore right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) relieved Rumpler and went 2/3 of an inning, allowing three runs (one earned).

Keener led the Eagles at the plate Saturday afternoon, going six-for-eight with two home runs, four RBIs, and four runs scored. He was followed by junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana), junior second baseman Bryan Davis (West Chester, Ohio) and sophomore designated hitter Brent Perry (Versailles, IN) with three hits on the afternoon.

USI will finish the four-game series with a doubleheader at Lewis Sunday, March 21. The first pitch is scheduled for noon. The Eagles will return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Wednesday, March 24, when the University of Missouri-St. Louis comes to Evansville for a doubleheader.
