USI baseball plays split series with SIUE this weekend
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team plays a home-and-home four-game series with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville this weekend. USI (10-20, 6-11 GLVC) will host the series opening doubleheader on Saturday, April 3, while SIUE (8-18, 5-8 GLVC) hosts the Sunday, April 4, doubleheader.
Both doubleheaders have 1 p.m. starts.
The Eagles are 1-0 this week after coming from behind to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan College, 4-3, on Wednesday. The nightcap of that doubleheader was called in the 10th inning due to darkness. The game will resume Wednesday, April 7, prior to the regularly scheduled doubleheader. Game time on Wednesday is
still to be determined.
USI junior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) leads the Eagles at the plate with a .366 batting average and a team high 22 RBIs. He also leads the squad with seven doubles and is tied with a team-high three home runs.
Junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) follows Keener with a .355 batting average and 18 RBIs. He leads the team with 10 stolen bases and is tied with Keener with three triples. Wetzel picked up his third triple of
the year against KWC on Wednesday.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) has a team-best 3-0 record in six appearances (five starts) and a 1.87 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) leads USI in saves with three.
The Cougars of SIUE have been playing well in the last week, winning three of their last four games. Junior infielder Jared Brueggeman leads the Cougars with a .364 batting average and is tied for second with 15 RBIs. Senior centerfielder Luke Humphrey leads the Cougars in RBIs with 20.
SIUE junior right-hander Jared Rettberg is tops on the mound for the Cougars with a 2.77 ERA and a 2-3 record.
The Eagles took two of three from the Cougars last season, but SIUE leads the all-time series, 48-32.
