USI baseball win opener, second called due to darkness

Game 2: Called due to darkness tied 6-6 after nine innings
For the second doubleheader in a row, the University of Southern Indiana baseball team won the first game of a doubleheader and have the nightcap called due to darkness, tied after nine innings. USI won the opener with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 3-2, to raise its record to 12-20 overall and 7-11 in the GLVC Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. SIUE fell to 8-19 overall, 5-9 GLVC.
The called game will be finished at SIUE’s Roy Lee Field Sunday, April 4, prior to the regularly scheduled doubleheader. Action will start Sunday at noon.
The Screaming Eagles picked up the game one victory by scoring three-unearned runs in the fourth inning. Down 2-1, senior catcher Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois) tripled to left center, driving in junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and junior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana).
Junior catcher/leftfielder Trevor Kelly (Marshall, Indiana) scored USI’s first run of the game on an error by SIUE’s pitcher Kyle Jones. Keener ground the ball up the middle and Jones threw wildly to second, allowing Kelley to score from second.
Junior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) picked up the game-one victory and raised his record to 3-2. Rumpler went 5 1/3 inning and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned). He also struck out three SIUE batters.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his team-best fourth save of the year, pitching a near-perfect seventh inning.
In the second game, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. USI struck for a run in the first inning on a RBI double by Wetzel, scoring Kelly from first. Kelly had reached on a one-out single to right center.
The second and third runs came in the second inning on a two-run single by junior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana), scoring sophomore third baseman Brent Perry (Versailles, Indiana) and sophomore first baseman Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana).
After the Cougars narrowed the lead to 3-2, USI upped the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth. Goers picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice bunt to score junior designated hitter Andy Rock (West Chester, Ohio), while sophomore leftfielder Jared Tekulve (Madison, Indiana) knocked in Hutton with a single.
The Cougars scored two in the seventh and tied the game in the eighth inning, but the Eagles bounced back to retake the lead, 6-5, in the bottom half of the inning. Senior outfielder Adam Anderson (Raleigh, Illinois), pinch running for Hutton, scored on a wild pitch to give USI the lead.
SIUE tied the game once again in the ninth on a single and two USI errors. The Eagles did not score in the ninth, sending the remainder of the game to Sunday tied 6-6.
