Edwardsville, IL The University of Southern Indiana baseball team concluded Saturday doubleheader in Edwardsville, Illinois, defeating Southern Illinois University, 7-6, in 10 innings, but lost a doubleheader to SIUE, 5-2 and 3-2 in 12 innings, Sunday afternoon to split the four-game series. USI finishes the weekend with a 12-22 overall record and 8-13 in the GLVC, while SIUE goes to 10-20 overall, 7-10 GLVC.

With the end of the 12 inning game two on Sunday, the Screaming Eagles have played extra innings in four of the last five games.

In the conclusion of the 7-6 victory, senior first baseman Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana). Junior second baseman Bryan Davis (West Chester, Ohio) followed with a single, scoring the Pritchard with the game winning run.

Freshman right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) picked up the win in relief for the Eagles, pitching a perfect top of the 10th inning.

In the regularly scheduled Sunday doubleheader, the Cougars jumped on Summers, who turned around and started game one for USI, for three runs in the second inning. The Eagles tried to comeback, pulling to within a run at 3-2 before SIUE sealed the victory with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Summers finished the day with a 2-3 record this spring.

The Eagles could not provide enough offense in game two, spoiling an 11-inning gem by junior right-hander/rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana). Keener, in his most effective outing of the season, went 11 innings for the no-decision and allowed six hits and two earned runs. He also struck out eight Cougars.

Keener held SIUE hitless through the first four innings and did not allow a run until the Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, 1-1. The Eagles had scored the first run of the game in the fourth on a RBI single to right off the bat of junior outfielder Trevor Kelly (Marshall, Michigan).

USI retook the lead in the top of the 11th inning when Davis scored on a single by junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana). The lead was short-lived as the Cougars bounced back to re-tie the game in the bottom half of the 11th.

In the bottom half of the 12th, SIUE loaded the bases against USI sophomore left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) and scored on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Robert Rahn.

USI resumes GLVC play Wednesday, April 7, when it travels to Kentucky Wesleyan College to conclude last Wednesday’s second half of a doubleheader and play the regularly scheduled pair of games. The game is tied 3-3 in the top of the 10th. Start time for Wednesday’s games is still to be determined.

The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Friday, April 9, when they host Oakland City University for a non-conference game. The first pitch next Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
