Eagles’ baseball plays five of six on the road this week
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team will play four of five on the road this week. USI travels to Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday, April 7, before taking on Oakland City University for a split home-and-home three-game series Friday and Saturday, April 9-10.
The USI-KWC match-ups Wednesday afternoon will begin at noon, rather than the scheduled 1 p.m. start. The Eagles and the Panthers will conclude the second game of last Wednesday’s doubleheader that was called due to darkness after nine innings with the game tied 3-3. The scheduled GLVC doubleheader will follow the completion the continued game.
USI leads the series this spring by winning the opening game last weekend, 4-3, with four runs in the bottom of the sixth for the come-from-behind victory. The Eagles lead the all-time series, 73-47.
The Eagles’ squad will return to the USI Baseball Field Friday for its only home game of the week when it welcomes Oakland City back for a single game at 2 p.m. USI won the season opener with OCU, 18-5, back in February. Following Friday’s match-up, the teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader at Oakland City Saturday starting at noon. The Eagles lead the all-time series with OCU, 64-7.
For the season, junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) leads the Eagles at the plate with a .359 batting average, 25 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. He also ranks second on the team with 20 RBIs.
Junior rightfielder/right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) follows Wetzel with a .331 batting average and leads the team with 24 RBIs. Keener also is tied for the team in lead with three home runs.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) leads the team with a 1.87 ERA and a 3-0 overall record. Watson picked up his third win of the year last week in USI’s victory over KWC.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) has been USI’s top reliever out of the bullpen with four saves and a 3.21 ERA.
