USI baseball goes JUCO with latest signings

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team announced the signing of catcher/first baseman Christopher Turner and catcher Jared Borders to national letters of intent for the 2005 season. Turner and Borders are the third and fourth players signed by USI Head Coach Mike Goedde this year.

“These are two outstanding additions to our program,” Goedde explained. “Each enjoyed outstanding seasons as sophomores with their respective junior college programs and we expect them to be equally productive as they bring their talents to USI.”

Turner transfers to USI from Lassen Community College (Susanville, California) where he hit .351 with eight doubles and 20 RBIs while helping lead the Cougars to the Golden Valley Conference Championship in 2004.

Prior to playing for LCC last year, Turner played for Jacksonville University (Jacksonville, Florida) in 2003. He hit .421 as a redshirt-freshman with a pair of doubles as a part of the 2003 Atlantic Sun Conference champions.

In high school, Turner played for West Lafayette High School (West Lafayette, Indiana) where he lettered in baseball and football. He was first team All-State, All-Area, and All-Conference as a senior when he hit .531 with four home runs and 41 RBIs.

“Chris will give us versatility as a catcher and an infielder,” Goedde said. “His ability to hit will find him a spot in the lineup.”

Borders transfers to USI from Kaskaskia College (Centralia, Illinois) where he was the team’s 2004 Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year. He hit .400 while earning All-Great Rivers Athletic Conference honors.

Borders graduated from Harrisburg High School (Harrisburg, Illinois) where he lettered in baseball, football, and wrestling prior to attending Kaskaskia.

“Jared will solidify our catching position,” Goedde said. “He has proven what he is capable of doing.”

Turner and Borders join right-handed pitchers Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) and Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) in signing with USI for the 2005 season.
