USI-OCU series starts Saturday
Eagles complete non-conference schedule this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team will complete its non-conference schedule this weekend with a home-and-home four-game series against Oakland City University. Saturday’s noon doubleheader will be in Oakland City, Indiana, while Sunday’s noon doubleheader will be at the USI Baseball Field.

USI (4-8) comes into the series having lost its last two and is 3-7 since opening the season at home against Indiana University-Southeast. The Screaming Eagles lost a 5-4 heartbreaker in the bottom of the ninth to the University of Evansville in their last game.

At the plate, senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) leads the Eagles after 12 games with a .439 batting average, six stolen bases, and five doubles. Senior utility player Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) is tied with Wetzel with 10 runs scored and leads the squad with 13 RBIs and three home runs.

Keener also is second on the team with .357 batting average and has posted a team-best ERA of 0.96 in three games.

In addition to Keener on the mound, sophomore right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana), senior right-hander Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana), junior right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana), and sophomore right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) have one victory apiece. Fadde and Watson rank one and two on the team strikeouts, posting 19 and 13, respectively.

The Mighty Oaks (7-3) also lost their last game to a Division I opponent, losing 11-2 to Indiana State University Wednesday afternoon. OCU has started the year by winning seven of its 10 contests, going 3-1 on its spring trip to Florida.

USI leads the all-time series with Oakland City University, 66-8, and has won eight of the last 10 games since 2002.

The Eagles open GLVC action March 23 on the road at Kentucky Wesleyan College for a noon doubleheader.
