USI opens GLVC action at KWC
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team opens the 2005 GLVC schedule on the road at Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
USI (8-8) is riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping four games from Oakland City University last weekend. The Screaming Eagles won three of the four in dramatic fashion, coming back from as many as two runs down on three different occasions.
The Eagles were 4-1 last week, led by senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana). Wetzel posted a .474 batting average in the five games with five runs scored and four RBIs, while Goers hit .353 with a .706 slugging percentage, a game-winning two-run home run and a game-tying two-run double.
Wetzel is hitting a team-best .429 in 2005, while senior utility player Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) has posted a team-high 17 RBIs, 14 runs scored, and four home runs.
On the mound, Keener leads the way with a 1.76 ERA in four games and 15.1 innings pitched. Sophomore right-handers Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) and Adam Vetters (Crown Point, Indiana) are tops on the team with a pair of victories each.
The Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan are just 1-10 in 2005 and will play Brescia University Tuesday prior to hosting the Eagles. KWC picked up its first victory of the season last weekend, splitting a doubleheader with Quincy University.
Panther junior outfielder Nick Hansen leads KWC at the plate with a .452 batting average, four doubles, three triples, and six RBIs.
USI leads the all-time series with KWC, 75-48, after winning three of the four-game series last spring. The Eagles also have won 11 of the last 15 games against KWC since 2000.
