USI baseball breaks streak and sweeps doubleheader

QUINCY, Ill.– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a five-game losing streak in game one and swept a doubleheader from Quincy University Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Illinois. USI goes to 22-24 overall and 14-16 GLVC, while Quincy falls to 24-20 overall, 16-12 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles turned the tables on Quincy in the 7-6 extra-inning game one victory. USI trailed 6-0 after four innings, but scored two in the fifth, four in the sixth, and one in the 10th for the victory.
USI senior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) led the Eagles seven-run comeback. Keener knocked in a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5 and scored the tying run when Quincy shortstop Chris Scroggins dropped a pop-up hit by sophomore leftfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana).
In the 10th, Keener knocked in junior catcher Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana) with the game-winner on one out single. Keener finished the first game three-for-five with three RBIs and a run scored.
On the mound, senior right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his first win of the year in relief. Goans (1-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing six hits and four walks.
Sophomore right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) recorded his third save of the year, getting the final two outs in the tenth. He relieved junior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana), who came in to get an out after Goans walked the first batter in the 10th.
In the nightcap, USI jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two innings and 4-3 after four-and-one half innings after Quincy tied the game 3-3 in the third. The Hawks responded to USI’s run in the fifth with a pair of tallies of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Down a run, the Eagles pushed three runs across to take a 7-5 lead, capped by a two-RBI double by senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) in the sixth. USI would score two more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory, 9-5.
Freshman right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) posted his first collegiate victory by pitching an inning of one-hit relief for starting right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana). Watson went the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits and five runs.
Senior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) finished the game for USI to record his first save of the year. Rumpler pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out one.
The Eagles resume the 12-game road swing Tuesday in St. Louis, Missouri, when they play a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. After next weekend four-game series at Saint Joseph’s College, USI will conclude the regular season with a four-game series May 7-8 against Northern Kentucky University.
