RENSSELAER, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team had its four-game winning streak snapped and lost a doubleheader to Saint Joseph’s College Saturday afternoon in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Pumas won the opener, 2-1, and the nightcap, 6-1.
The losses drop the Screaming Eagles to 24-26 overall and 16-18 in the GLVC, while the Pumas go to 31-14 overall, 23-7 GLVC.
Saint Joseph’s scored a run in the sixth and a run with two outs in the seventh to earn the 2-1 victory. USI had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) doubled in freshman designated hitter Justin Wolfe (Brookville, Indiana).
USI senior right-hander Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles. Fadde (3-5) allowed two runs on five hits in six-plus innings of work. Senior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) relieved Fadde after SJC leftfielder Bo Gum reached on a single and eventually scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
Eagles junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) remained stuck on six victories as the Pumas won game two 6-1. Summers (6-2) allowed 11 hits and six runs, five earned, and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings of work.
Offensively, the Eagles could only muster three hits in the opener and eight hits in the nightcap.
USI concludes the 12-game road trip with a final doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s College in Sunday. The doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start. The Eagles will finish the 2005 regular season at the USI Baseball Field by hosting a four-game series with Northern Kentucky University May 7-8.
